Buyer's guide

Buying a tank instead of a whole truck

When tank-only is the smarter buy

Plenty of our customers already own a good chassis — a cab and chassis sitting in the yard, a dump truck they're converting, or a truck whose old tank finally gave up. Buying the tank by itself costs a fraction of a complete water truck and lets you put water on a chassis you already know the history of. It also lets you build exactly the truck you want instead of living with somebody else's spray layout.

Match the tank to the chassis before you buy anything

This is where conversions go wrong. Water weighs about 8.34 pounds per gallon, so a full 4,000-gallon tank is roughly 33,400 pounds sitting on your frame before you count the tank itself, the pump and the plumbing. Check your chassis GVWR, your rear axle rating and your suspension against that number, not against what the tank is rated to hold. Also measure your usable frame length behind the cab and your frame rail width — a tank that's four inches too long or built for a wider saddle spacing turns into a fabrication job. Send us your chassis year, make, model and wheelbase and we'll tell you what fits.

Steel vs. poly

Steel tanks are the standard on work trucks. They take abuse, they can be welded and repaired in the field, and they hold up to rough roads. The tradeoff is weight and rust — steel rusts from the inside out and at the saddles, and it will need attention over a long life. Poly tanks don't rust and weigh less, which buys you payload, but they crack instead of denting and a cracked poly tank is usually a replacement rather than a repair. For potable water or chemical service, poly is often the right call. For lease roads and construction, steel is what most buyers here end up with.

Baffles are not optional

Any tank you put on a truck needs internal baffles. Without them, a half-full tank turns into a wave that shoves the truck forward every time you touch the brakes and sideways every time you turn. Every tank we sell is listed with its baffle configuration. If you're looking at a used tank anywhere — from us or otherwise — get someone to open the manway and confirm the baffles are actually intact and not rusted loose.

What comes with it

Some tanks come bare. Others come as a complete package: pump, PTO or auxiliary engine, rear spray bar, side sprays, front cannon, valves, hose reel and cab controls. The listing tells you exactly what's included, down to the fittings. If a tank comes bare and you need the rest, we stock pumps, heads and plumbing — see our water truck parts page or call and we'll put a package together.

Mounting and setup

A tank swap is real work: saddles, mounting hardware, PTO installation, hydraulic or air plumbing to the cab, and control wiring. Some buyers handle it in their own shop; others want it done. {{INSTALL_POLICY}} Either way, call us before you buy so we can confirm the tank and the chassis are actually a match.

Why buy from CN Trucks

Ready to work, not a project.
Units are gone over before they go up, and anything we know needs attention is written into the listing. You are buying a truck that can take a job Monday, not one that goes to your shop first.
Parts that actually fit.
Send a photo of what came off and we will match it — pumps, spray heads, valves, plumbing. Used parts are priced as used, and we tell you what they came off of.
Ask and we go look.
Hour meter, frame rail, tank interior, a weld you want a second opinion on. Tell us what you need to see and we check it before you drive out.
We tell you what we know — and what we do not.
Miles, hours, known issues, what has been replaced. If we do not have service records on a unit, we say that instead of guessing.
Sold units stay up.
We leave them online with their specs and their price, so you can see what a truck like yours actually went for. If it says Sold, it is sold — call and we will tell you what is close.
Bring your mechanic.
Come see it, send somebody, or line up a pre-purchase inspection. We are not in a hurry to hide anything.

Got a question about a truck? Ask it.

Call and somebody who's walked around the unit picks up. Want a photo of the frame rail, the tank saddle, or the hour meter? Ask and we'll go shoot it.
