Buyer's guide

What to check on a used sleeper

Engine and the miles you're actually buying

A 500,000-mile truck with a documented in-frame is a different purchase than a 500,000-mile truck with no records at all. We list the engine, the mileage on the odometer, and any major work we know about. When we don't have service records, we say so — that's not us hiding something, it's the reality of the used truck market, and it should be reflected in what you pay. The engines you'll see most on our lot are the Detroit DD13 and DD15, Cummins ISX and X15, PACCAR MX-13 and Volvo D13. Parts and service availability across Texas is good on all of them, which matters more than brand loyalty when you're broken down in Odessa.

Transmission: manual, automated, or automatic

Manuals are cheap to buy and cheap to fix, and plenty of experienced drivers still prefer them. Automated manuals — the Eaton UltraShift and Volvo I-Shift you'll see on newer units — cost more up front but widen your driver pool considerably, and that's the real argument for them if you're hiring. If you're an owner-operator who's been shifting for twenty years, don't pay the premium for something you don't want. If you're a small fleet trying to keep seats filled, the automated truck is easier to staff.

Rear ratio and how you'll actually run

Rear axle ratio decides whether the truck is comfortable at 65 hauling heavy or wound up and burning fuel. A tall ratio in the 2.47 to 2.79 range is built for fuel economy on flat highway running at weight. Deeper ratios pull better out of the hole and handle grades and heavy loads, at the cost of RPM and fuel at cruise. Every sleeper we list shows the ratio. If you tell us your typical load and lanes, we'll tell you straight whether a given truck is geared for it.

The sleeper box itself

Look at the bunk the way you'd look at an apartment, because for a lot of drivers that's what it is. Check the mattress, the bunk heater, the inverter, the fridge if there is one, and whether the APU works — a functioning APU is worth real money in Texas summers and saves fuel every night. Then check for water intrusion. Soft spots in the bunk floor, stained headliner or a musty smell mean a leak somewhere in the roof or the seals, and that's a repair that gets worse if it's ignored.

Sleeper vs. day cab — be honest about your lanes

If your trucks come home most nights, you're paying for weight, fuel and cab you don't use. Run the numbers before you buy a sleeper out of habit. If you're genuinely over the road or your drivers stage overnight at a lease, the bunk earns its keep. We sell both, and we'd rather point you at the right one than move the more expensive unit.

Inspection and paperwork

Every sleeper on the lot is listed with what we know about its DOT inspection status and title. Bring your own mechanic or line up a pre-purchase inspection — {{PPI_POLICY}} Ask us to pull the ECM report if you want the hard numbers on idle time and engine hours.

Why buy from CN Trucks

Ready to work, not a project.
Units are gone over before they go up, and anything we know needs attention is written into the listing. You are buying a truck that can take a job Monday, not one that goes to your shop first.
Parts that actually fit.
Send a photo of what came off and we will match it — pumps, spray heads, valves, plumbing. Used parts are priced as used, and we tell you what they came off of.
Ask and we go look.
Hour meter, frame rail, tank interior, a weld you want a second opinion on. Tell us what you need to see and we check it before you drive out.
We tell you what we know — and what we do not.
Miles, hours, known issues, what has been replaced. If we do not have service records on a unit, we say that instead of guessing.
Sold units stay up.
We leave them online with their specs and their price, so you can see what a truck like yours actually went for. If it says Sold, it is sold — call and we will tell you what is close.
Bring your mechanic.
Come see it, send somebody, or line up a pre-purchase inspection. We are not in a hurry to hide anything.

Got a question about a truck? Ask it.

Call and somebody who's walked around the unit picks up. Want a photo of the frame rail, the tank saddle, or the hour meter? Ask and we'll go shoot it.
