Buyer's guide

Buying a dump truck: what actually matters

Axle setup drives your legal payload

A tandem-axle dump is the default for most dirt work — easy to maneuver, cheap to run, and legal for typical loads on Texas roads. Add a tri-axle or a lift axle and you buy yourself more legal weight per trip, which pays off fast on longer hauls where each round trip has real cost. Quad-axle setups make sense on heavy aggregate and base work. Before you decide, run the numbers on your actual haul: distance, material weight per yard, and how many trips a day you need. The cheapest truck to buy is not always the cheapest truck to run.

Bed material: steel or aluminum

Steel beds take abuse. If you're loading rip-rap, broken concrete, or anything a trackhoe drops from height, steel is the answer and the extra weight is the price of not replacing the bed. Aluminum saves 1,500 to 2,500 pounds, which goes straight into payload — a real advantage on sand, base and topsoil where you're hitting weight before you hit volume. Look at the floor first on any used bed. A wavy floor or a patched section tells you what the truck hauled and how it was loaded.

Hoist and cylinder — run it before you buy

The hoist is the single most expensive thing to fix on a dump truck. We raise every bed before we list it, and we'll raise it again for you standing right there. Watch it go up loaded if you can. What you're looking for: smooth travel with no shudder, no drift back down when it's held up, dry seals on the cylinder, and pins that aren't egged out. A slow leak at the cylinder packing is a repair; a bent cylinder is a different conversation.

Tailgate, pins and hinges

Air-operated tailgates should snap open clean and latch square. Hinge pins wear out and get replaced — that's normal. What you don't want is elongated hinge holes in the bed or a tailgate that only seals on one side, because that's where you lose material down the road and where a load-securement citation comes from. Check the top rail for the bow that comes from years of loader buckets kissing it.

Drivetrain and the miles that count

Dump truck miles lie. A truck with 300,000 miles that spent its life doing three-mile round trips out of a pit has more engine hours and more transmission cycles than a highway tractor with 600,000. Look at the hour meter if there is one, and look at the brakes, the rears and the suspension — that's where short-haul dump work shows up first. We list what we know about how each truck was used, because it tells you more than the odometer.

Getting it to the job

Most of our dump trucks are road-ready and can be driven off the lot. Bring a driver with the right CDL and current medical card and you can leave with it the same day. If you'd rather have it hauled, {{DELIVERY_POLICY}}

Why buy from CN Trucks

Ready to work, not a project.
Units are gone over before they go up, and anything we know needs attention is written into the listing. You are buying a truck that can take a job Monday, not one that goes to your shop first.
Parts that actually fit.
Send a photo of what came off and we will match it — pumps, spray heads, valves, plumbing. Used parts are priced as used, and we tell you what they came off of.
Ask and we go look.
Hour meter, frame rail, tank interior, a weld you want a second opinion on. Tell us what you need to see and we check it before you drive out.
We tell you what we know — and what we do not.
Miles, hours, known issues, what has been replaced. If we do not have service records on a unit, we say that instead of guessing.
Sold units stay up.
We leave them online with their specs and their price, so you can see what a truck like yours actually went for. If it says Sold, it is sold — call and we will tell you what is close.
Bring your mechanic.
Come see it, send somebody, or line up a pre-purchase inspection. We are not in a hurry to hide anything.

Got a question about a truck? Ask it.

Call and somebody who's walked around the unit picks up. Want a photo of the frame rail, the tank saddle, or the hour meter? Ask and we'll go shoot it.
